Festive Fairies

I must to admit that at the Garden Writers Annual Symposium in Tucson, Arizona, in addition to seeing great gardens, I did take a little time for some retail therapy.

I found the most amazing pop-up book – How to Find Flower Fairies, by Cicely Mary Barker in an Anthropologie store.

This 3-D cut out book features shapes of tree, forest, flower and marsh fairies which spring to life off the page! Most importantly it has a great price point. What a unique gift idea for the gardening geek in your life!

If you are a retailer, why not create a promotion around fairy-inspired trees, shrubs and flowers throughout the year? Fairies cover each season and an array of plants and flowers. Besides books there are a multitude of fairy tie-in items like statuary, figurines, ornaments and more!

Holly Fairy for the Holidays!

Per English folklore, the way to win over a holly fairies favor is to adorn your home at yuletide with the branches of holly and berries to bring all who enter tidings of good fortune.

With its bold blue-green and cream two toned foliage with raspberry colored new growth, may we suggest Santa’s Delight variegated holly!

The Holly Fairy Song

Holly Fairy, artwork courtesy of Flower Fairies Official WebsiteO, I am green in Winter-time,
When other trees are brown;
Of all the trees
(So saith the rhyme)
The holly bears the crown.
December days are drawing near
When I shall come to town,
And carol-boys go singing clear
Of all the trees
(O hush and hear!)
The holly bears the crown!
For who so well-beloved and merry
Christmas Crack Recipe

Holiday Goodies

Every year I bake, box up and ship out goodie packages to many colleagues and customers.
Josh’s Cracker Mix has been a standout hit.

Josh Rex is my first cousin and fellow Penn State Nittany Lionalumni.
At his wedding he gave out goodie bags filled with this mix for munching.

John Lewis of JLPN in Oregon has nick-named it ‘Christmas Crack’ because you can’t stop eating it. Enjoy but watch you don’t get addicted!

‘Christmas Crack’ Recipe

Combine dry ingredients in a large roasting pan:
1 box triangular Triscuits
1 box white cheddar Cheez-its
1 box Wheat Thins
1 box mini Ritz Sandwich Crackers
(regular cheese flavor or for those who like spicy use Kickin-it Cheddar)
1 box cracker of your choice. I actually use a bag of Pepperidge Farm fish crackers AND 1 box Keeblers Mini Club Crackers (all or part of the Mini Club Crackers works)
In a mixing bowl combine:
1 cup veg or canola oil
2 packages dry Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing
1/8 to 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
1 tsp Dill Weed
Cooking Instructions
Preheat oven to 225 degrees.
Pour wet mixture over crackers.
Mix well to coat.
Bake in oven for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
Turn off oven and leave in pan in oven overnight to cool.

When completely cool, package in airtight baggie or containers.

Makes about 8 servings.
Can be frozen in zip lock baggies if needed.

Remember Those in Need

Jim and I have been supporters of our local Salvation Army of Painesville & Lake County, Ohio for many years. Their Red Kettles and bell ringers are a fixture during the holiday season.  When you see them outside your favorite retail establishment, please consider donating to this or another local charity that will help those less fortunate also have a joyous noel.
