‘Tis Better to Give Than to Receive

In a packed room at Cultivate’14, Garry Grueber, a partner at Cultivaris painted a picture of just how radically different horticulture will look in 30 years. Garry spoke on a project Cultivaris began six years ago. |

Garry and Josh helped address the future needs of global hunger by developing a protocol for invitro propagation of Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis). This initiative has enabled the Global Breadfruit division of Cultivaris to ship trees to tropical farmers and aid organizations globally.
Working with the Breadfruit Institute and organizations likeTrees That Feed Foundation, Cultivaris/GBF partner Josh Schneider has shipped trees to thousands of poor farmers in more than 30 countries.
“Our Breadfruit begin producing after two years and continue for more than fifty years, producing enough to feed a family for six months each year,” said Schneider.
Breadfruit is a nutritious, starchy fruit that cooks and tastes like a potato and can easily be processed into a high quality, gluten-free flour.
“For the first time in history, we have a potentially permanent solution to hunger in tropical regions.”
– Dr. Diane Ragone, Breadfruit Institute Director.
